Cambrian Bioworks recognized the need for a new user interface for Manta, their advanced DNA extraction machine. Despite its groundbreaking technology, Manta's existing interface failed to meet the usability expectations of its diverse user base, leading to inefficiencies in real-world applications. Manta is used in critical scenarios such as clinical research, genetic testing, and biotechnology labs, where precision and reliability are paramount. The demand for a streamlined, intuitive interface that could cater to varied work environments and user expertise levels was evident.

To address this, we embarked on a comprehensive design overhaul. Our journey began with a deep dive into Manta’s current UI to identify pain points and improvement opportunities. We discovered that the information architecture was outdated, navigation was unintuitive, and the interface lacked visual coherence. With these insights, we proposed three design directions: a Minimal approach focusing on simplicity and functionality, a Maximal approach with bold visual elements, and a 3D direction offering depth and interactivity.

After careful consideration, the Minimal direction with a light theme was chosen. This approach aligned with Manta’s goal of creating a user-centric experience that prioritized clarity and ease of use. To demonstrate this, we developed two key screens showcasing a cleaner layout and simplified navigation. The client’s positive response validated our direction and set the foundation for the redesign.

Building on this momentum, we began sketching wireframes and designing UX flows to redefine Manta’s user journey. The workflows we tackled included running protocols, connecting to Wi-Fi, user onboarding, and cloud integration. For example, streamlining the protocol workflow meant reducing redundant steps, presenting critical information upfront, and incorporating visual cues for better user guidance. Our competitor analysis revealed best practices in similar interfaces, allowing us to benchmark our designs against industry standards and further refine the user experience.

Adapting existing screens to the new design language was equally crucial. We ensured consistency across the interface while addressing specific needs of varied work environments. For instance, biotech labs operating in dimly lit conditions would benefit from the dark theme, while well-lit clinical settings could leverage the light theme for better visibility. This thematic adaptability enhanced usability in diverse contexts, ensuring Manta could perform optimally regardless of the surroundings.

To provide a holistic experience, we developed both light and dark themes in parallel, ensuring seamless transitions and maintaining design coherence. Each theme was meticulously tested to ensure that color contrasts, typography, and visual hierarchy met accessibility standards and user preferences.

The iterative design process included multiple rounds of feedback and refinements. Through collaborative discussions with the Cambrian team, we honed every detail, from iconography to interaction patterns. The final prototype was a fully functional representation of the redesigned UI, enabling stakeholders to experience the new workflows firsthand and provide final inputs.

Upon approval, we delivered a comprehensive design package. This included detailed design files for light and dark themes, annotated UX flows, and development-ready assets. These materials ensured a smooth transition from design to implementation, empowering Cambrian to bring the new Manta UI to life.

The redesigned interface has transformed Manta into a more intuitive and efficient tool for DNA extraction. Users now benefit from a logical information architecture, streamlined workflows, and a modern aesthetic that reflects Cambrian’s innovative spirit. Features like cloud integration and user-friendly onboarding position Manta as a future-ready solution in the biotech industry. The design accommodates diverse operational settings, making it a versatile tool for professionals across various domains.

Working with Cambrian Bioworks on this project was a rewarding experience. By addressing real-world challenges and delivering a user-centric solution, we demonstrated the transformative power of thoughtful design. The success of this collaboration underscores the importance of aligning technology with user needs to drive meaningful innovation.
