Cambrian Bioworks is a biotechnology company specializing in the development of platforms and molecular diagnostics products. They manufacture high molecular weight genomic DNA (gDNA) isolation kits, which are utilized in applications such as HLA typing in diagnostics and bioinformatics.

Their solutions are designed to scale with laboratory needs, catering to both small research teams and high-throughput facilities.

Traditional analog microscopes, widely used in schools, colleges, and laboratories, lack digital capabilities, making it difficult to capture, share, and analyze images effectively. Upgrading to modern digital microscopes is often expensive, leading to unnecessary waste as well-built analog microscopes are discarded for new models.

Our modular screen attachment transforms existing analog microscopes into powerful digital microscopes with just a screen, camera, lens, and Raspberry Pi 5. This cost-effective upgrade eliminates the need for expensive replacements, making digital microscopy accessible to educational institutions and research labs. Users can capture and share images within their community, enhancing collaboration and learning.

Beyond simple imaging, our AI-powered solution brings advanced functionalities like automated cell counting and image analysis with a single touch. This not only modernizes old microscopes but also promotes sustainability by extending their lifecycle, reducing e-waste, and maximizing their usability in scientific and educational environments.

Revolutionizing Microscopy with a Digital Touch

Transforming a traditional microscope into a digital solution required a delicate balance between preserving the classic user experience and introducing modern functionality. We began by focusing on the user’s interaction with the screen, inspired by the familiar circular viewport of conventional microscopes. Retaining this unique feature, we opted for a circular digital display to provide an intuitive and seamless transition to the digital realm. Designing an interface and feature set for a circular screen posed challenges, especially in optimizing interactions and functionality within the confined shape. However, this constraint became a creative opportunity, allowing us to craft a distinctive experience that stands apart in the market.

Innovative Physical Adjustments for User Comfort

To enhance usability, we introduced unique physical transitions and adjustable features in the digital module. The circular screen was engineered to rotate within a specific range, allowing users to tilt it for optimal viewing angles. This flexibility ensures a comfortable experience, whether the microscope is placed on a tall table, used while sitting, or adjusted for standing use. Additionally, the screen can rotate 180 degrees, enabling collaborative work by showing the screen to another person seated across the table. This thoughtful feature caters to scenarios like reviewing specimens or discussing cell counts, making the design as functional as it is innovative.

Compact Engineering for Seamless Integration

A major challenge was integrating the internal components, such as the PCB, camera, cables, and board, into a compact and serviceable design. We meticulously arranged these elements to ensure seamless interaction and efficient servicing. Ergonomic considerations played a critical role in positioning the ports for USB and Ethernet connections. By situating them behind the screen, we maintained a clean and clutter-free front view while ensuring easy accessibility for the user. This approach not only optimized functionality but also contributed to a sleek and professional aesthetic for the digital microscope.

A Perfect Blend of Form and Function

The transformation of the microscope into a digital solution highlights our commitment to creating user-centric designs that push boundaries. The circular screen, combined with its rotation and ergonomic features, provides a distinctive experience that retains the essence of traditional microscopy while embracing digital advancements. Compact engineering ensures the internal components remain unobtrusive, supporting a clean and functional design. This project exemplifies how thoughtful design and engineering can seamlessly merge to deliver innovative, practical, and market-leading solutions that redefine industry standards.

To ensure the design met ergonomic and usability standards, we extensively utilized 3D printing for rapid prototyping throughout the development process. These prototypes allowed us to evaluate the physical dimensions, user interactions, and ergonomic adjustments in real-world scenarios. By simulating the placement of components like the circular screen, rotating mechanisms, and internal cable management, we identified potential usability challenges early on. Usability testing with the prototypes provided valuable insights, enabling us to refine the screen rotation angles, port placements, and overall form factor for optimal user convenience. This iterative approach not only accelerated the design process but also ensured a seamless balance between functionality and user comfort, resulting in a more polished and user-friendly final product.
